TECNO Camon 17 Pro Camera Review: A Big Step Forward

TECNO Camon 17 Pro recently launched in east Africa Kenya.

TECNO Camon 17 Pro sports five cameras – a quad setup at the back and centtred punch-hole selfie camera.

The quad setup includes a 64MP main camera, an 8MP wide camera, 2MP depth and a 2MP monochrome sensor.

The camera bump sits at the top left and also has a quad-LED flash.

In the top middle of the 6.8″ display is the 48MP front-facing camera housed inside the punch-hole cutout. We have a dual-LED flash at the top bezel too.

TECNO brought in a new AI- powered photography and videography features to play around with when using the new TECNO Camon 17 Pro.

There’s SuperNight mode for photography and for videos, you have new customizable video templates with themes surrounding travel, sport, party, performance, street, family and more. These templates come together with a variety of transitions, camera movements and music choices in the Film mode.

The camera interface itself is pretty smooth and shooting modes are easily and quickly accessible – switching between Film, Video, AI cam, Beauty, Portrait, Super Night, and you can swipe up too to access the same features now wit h AR shot, Ultra HD, Slow Motion, Time Lapse, Panorama.

and you can easily access all the shooting modes, toggle HDR, AI, flash, access Google Lens, and more.

You can also shoot 4K video for both selfie and regular video at 30fps. Other shooting resolutions include 1080p at 60fps and 30fps.

Other video modes include video bokeh mode(for selfie videos too), video beauty mode(for regular videos too), ultra-steady mode(capped at 1080p at 30fps), slowmotion(capped at 960fps) and Time-lapse at 1080p at 30fps.

All these modes were fun to play with especially the film templates that come in handy when sharing short videos on social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram Stories, Fleets and WhatsApp Status videos.

Shooting at 4K means you can now upload your high quality content to platforms like YouTube.

For photos, TECNO brought its A game for the Camon 17 Pro and stepped up its image processing.

Photos taken in well-lit scenarios are generally respectable as you’ll see in sample shots below. The photos are rich with relatively sharp details and strong dynamic range for most shots.

There’s 2x zoom and macro mode to play with. There’s wide-angle mode too which took surprisingly good shots without the barrel distortion you would see in wide-angle photos.

It’s worth noting that when you’re shooting subjects close up, you get some nice natural background blur which I loved.

Lowlight shots are pretty impressive and TECNO included Super Night Mode to help taking shots in these challenging situations.
